The Power of Community in Creating Social Change: A Scottish Changemaker's Perspective

Being part of the Scotland Changemakers community, supported by The Hunters Foundation, has taught me that true social transformation happens when people with lived experience come together with shared purpose and determination.

Our purpose, highlighted in the Foundation's promotional video, represents more than individual efforts—it embodies the collective power of Scottish communities working toward meaningful change.

The strength of our changemaker community lies in its diversity. We have faced various challenges firsthand, bringing our lived expertise to the table.

This real-world experience proves invaluable when developing solutions that actually work for the people they're meant to serve. Our perspectives aren't just valued—they're essential to creating lasting social impact.

Our approach is unique because social change isn't about quick fixes or top-down solutions. Instead, it's about building sustainable, community-driven initiatives that address root causes rather than symptoms.

The Hunters Foundation has recognised this by providing financial support and advisory programmes and creating a platform where changemakers can connect, collaborate, and amplify each other's efforts.

The recent video introducing the people behind highlights more than our individual projects or organisational impact—it tells the story of a movement.

A movement that believes in the power of local knowledge, collective action, and the importance of giving voice to those who have traditionally been left out of decision-making processes.

The message to me is clear: we will not continue to sit on the sideline while those with the power to implement and affect positive social change sit on their hands, waiting for the next election to make big promises.

Being a changemaker isn't always easy. We face obstacles, setbacks, in-work poverty, and moments of doubt. However, the strength of our community lies in how we support each other through these challenges. When one of us struggles, others step in with encouragement, expertise, and practical help.

This support system was invaluable during the early days of COVID-19 response and recovery. As part of the Changemaker, this solidarity makes seemingly impossible goals achievable.

As we continue our work across Scotland, we're not just implementing projects but building a new social change model.

One that recognises that those closest to the problems are often closest to the solutions.

Our community demonstrates that transformative change becomes possible when people with lived experience are empowered and supported.

The Hunters Foundation's recognition through their video is more than just publicity—it validates our approach and invites others to join this movement.

Ultimately, social change isn't about individual heroes; it's about communities coming together, sharing their wisdom, and working collectively toward a better future for Scotland. Follow all of us, work with us, and we are such a positive and approachable bunch. We relish collaboration, as this work of change can not be led and done by one person, organisation, or group; it requires all of us to pitch in.
